1. The price gap, and which way it runs
SHISEIDO's flagship liquid foundations — Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing and Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting — both list at ¥6,600 including tax in Japan. The US price for the Self-Refreshing foundation is $51.00.
| Japan | United States | |
|---|---|---|
| Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing | ¥6,600 (about $42) | $51.00 |
| Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting | ¥6,600 (about $42) | — |
| SPF marking | SPF35 / PA++++ | SPF 30 |
| Shades in market | 12 | Broader range |
2. Which SHISEIDO foundation is which
The Synchro Skin name covers several products with confusingly similar packaging. The finish is the actual difference.
| Product | Finish | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing | Semi-matte, long wear | Oily and combination skin, humid weather, long days |
| Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting | Luminous, more coverage | Dry skin, and anyone wanting glow rather than control |
| Synchro Skin Powder | Powder | Touch-ups, or a light base on its own |
| Synchro Skin Cushion | Cushion compact | Portability and mid-day reapplication |
If you are choosing between the two liquids and cannot test them, the rule of thumb is simple: Self-Refreshing if you get shiny by mid-afternoon, Radiant Lifting if you get tight and flat. Everything else about them is close.
3. Shade matching is the real risk, not the price
This is the section that matters more than any of the numbers above, and it is the reason we would tell most visitors to buy their foundation at home.
| Problem | What happens |
|---|---|
| Different shade ranges by market | Japan carries 12 shades; other markets carry a broader range. Your usual shade code may simply not exist on the Japanese counter |
| Undertone calibration | Shade families are built for the market's customer base. The same number can sit differently |
| Store lighting | Department store lighting flatters everything. Test in daylight before committing |
| No returns on opened cosmetics | Once opened, a mismatched ¥6,600 bottle is a ¥6,600 loss |
The one situation where buying in Japan clearly wins is a counter consultation. SHISEIDO is a department store brand at home, staff will match you properly, and the Foundation Finder tool exists for a reason. That is a real service and worth the trip to Ginza or Shinjuku — if you have the time to sit down for it.
4. Why the Japanese bottle says SPF35 and the American one SPF 30
Same brand, same product family, different numbers. The explanation is regulatory, and the same pattern shows up across Japanese cosmetics.
Japanese sunscreens and SPF-bearing cosmetics are regulated as cosmetics or quasi-drugs under Japan's own framework, and Japan additionally publishes a graded UVA rating — PA+ through PA++++. US sunscreens are regulated as over-the-counter drugs under an FDA monograph, with a narrower approved filter list and no graded UVA scale, only a Broad Spectrum pass or fail. A product sold in both markets is reformulated and re-labelled to each one's requirements, so the two bottles are not necessarily the same formula in different boxes.
5. Where to buy it in Japan
| Where | Notes |
|---|---|
| Department store counters | Ginza, Shinjuku, Isetan-class stores. Staff matching, full shade range, tax-free processed in store. The route worth using |
| Shiseido official online store | Full range at list price. Japanese-only and no matching help |
| Airport duty-free | Narrow shade selection and no proper matching. The worst place to buy foundation |
| Drugstores | Generally not the SHISEIDO prestige line. Drugstores carry the mass-market brands |
Tax-free needs your passport and a per-store minimum spend, so consolidate a cosmetics purchase into one shop rather than spreading it. For the wider picture, see Japanese drugstore makeup for the affordable end and Japanese beauty products for what actually justifies luggage space.
6. The verdict
SHISEIDO's Synchro Skin foundations are good products with a modest Japan discount attached. If you already wear one and know your shade, buying it at a Tokyo counter saves roughly 18% and takes ten minutes.
If you do not know your shade, the saving is not the point — the counter consultation is. Book the time, get matched properly in a department store, and treat the price difference as a bonus rather than the reason. And do not buy foundation at the airport on the way out; that is where the mismatches happen.
7. List price is not the price — and that changes the answer
Everything in section 1 compares manufacturer list against manufacturer list. That is the fair like-for-like comparison, and it is also not what most American shoppers actually pay.
The Self-Refreshing foundation lists at $51.00 on Shiseido's own US site. It is routinely available from large US retailers well below that — we found it listed at $35.52 at one national chain while checking prices for this page. Japanese department store pricing does not move like that: counter prices are stable, and discounting a prestige cosmetic is not how the Japanese market works.
| Compared against | US | Japan ¥6,600 | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| US list price | $51.00 | ~$42 | Japan ~18% cheaper |
| A typical US discount price | $35.52 | ~$42 | Japan is more expensive |
This does not apply evenly across the brands we cover. Clé de Peau's roughly 46% gap survives any reasonable discount assumption, and DHC's 45% does too. An 18% gap does not.
Reading the shade codes
If you do buy in Japan, the numbering is the same three-digit system used internationally, which helps more than people expect.
| Element | Reading |
|---|---|
| First digit | Depth. Lower is lighter; the scale runs upward through the range |
| Last two digits | Position within that depth band, broadly by undertone |
| Shade name | A mineral or material name paired with the number. Names are consistent across markets where the shade exists |
| What it does not tell you | Whether that code is stocked in Japan. Japan carries 12 shades of the liquids; a code you know from home may simply not be on the counter |
Bring a photo of your current bottle's label rather than relying on memory. Counter staff can match against a physical code far faster than against a description, and it removes the language problem from the most consequential part of the purchase.
8. FAQ
Sources & Method
The Japanese price is Shiseido's own tax-inclusive price for the Synchro Skin liquid foundations, cross-checked against the company's own product renewal announcement; the US price is the listed price on Shiseido's US site. Both checked on 8 August 2026. The ¥-to-$ conversion uses roughly ¥157 to the dollar — rely on the yen and dollar figures, not the conversion. Shade counts and SPF markings are the manufacturer's own for each market. Finish descriptions follow Shiseido's positioning; the choose-by-finish rule, the shade-matching warning and the verdict are our own editorial position.
